Passion for Photography and Video
Philip started making movies when he was 17. He worked at a store selling cameras to learn about cameras and so he could buy cameras and lenses at a discount. He bought a SLR Canon AE-1 camera and multiple lenses. He bought a Bell & Howell Super 8 movie camera. Then, he traveled to Japan and made a movie about Kyoto and did street photography.
When he returned to the US, he discovered he used all his University art classes when in Japan and would have to change his major to take more art classes. He couldn't imagine life without art. So, in addition to studying East Asian Studies full-time at Hamline University, he studied photography and film making at Film In The Cities in the evenings.
The photography course introduced him to legendary photographers and he learned how to see the architecture of photography. He was enamoured with Roland Barthe's "Camera Lucida" and Sergei Eisenstein's "Film Form" discussing the grammar of film making. He reveled in the avant garde film makers and when he became President of the Hamline Film Society he curated a program of showing Maya Duran, Stan Brakage, Andy Warhohl, Fernand Leger movies. He developed a lifetime passion for doing street photography and film making.
When he completed all the Film In the City courses, he looked for an internship. He found that a local musician named PRINCE was making a movie. He called the office so many times that they all knew him by first name ... and he was able to become a Production Assistant ... and driver to the Cast of Purple Rain.
Recently, he's been making art works in VR, videos about Neo Art Space, creating videos about his art, and creating heirloom videos of elders discussing their art and appreciation of art. He's also using a GoPro and Drone to create videos.
He can provide links to videos he produced as a Creative Director for CaringBridge, Schwan's, ALTAFI, Target and Fingerhut.
