Minneapolis - St. Paul International Airport Commissioned art installations by Philip Noyed
Philip Noyed created two major and
innovative art installations for the Minneapolis - St. Paul airport
Terminal 2.
The installations are created to touch on themes based on the joy of air travel as well as interpretations of iconic Minnesota
like the Northern Lights and the Star of the North.
Due to gate expansion, The Leap of Joy has been de-installed.
It is now available for sale.
MSP AIRPORT INSTALLATION VIDEO
I produced this short trailer video. Below you can view the complete video on creating and installing the artwork and a video produced by the airport about all the art installations.
The Leap of Joy

About the Leap of Joy
The Leap of Joy inspired by air travel and by Henri Matisse's painting, Bonheur de Vivre (The Joy of Life). I thought of the Joy of Life, the Joy of Color and the Joy of Travel ... and, from these ideas, I developed the Leap of Joy.
The Leap of Joy expresses the joy of travel. It starts with a 25-foot long angle light box that springs into an arc of free-floating rainbow diamonds that culminates in the Rainbow Leaper. The arc of the images and the Leaper follows the arc of an airplane taking off.
This installation speaks to the magic of taking off from one airport to another and quantum leaping forward into the future.
COLORS AND IMAGES
All of the colors of the Rainbow are shown in the angle starting with red and ending with violet. The diamonds invert the colors of the rainbow from violet to red and then there is a rainbow diamond immediately before the Rainbow Leaper. All of the images are original photographs I shot of my paintings and digitally manipulated for this installation.
All of the images are Lambda prints surface mounted onto acrylic. The Rainbow Leaper is constructed of Aluminum and covered with rainbow vinyl.
Aurora Borealis, Rainbow Diamond and Star of the North

Star of the North

Rainbow Diamond - Goes through Colors of Rainbow
The Aurora Borealis Installation
The Aurora Borealis, brings the colors of the
Northern Lights to life in the airport. The Aurora Borealis wall is 60 feet long by 6 feet tall.
In the very middle of this sixty-foot long
series of chevron images is a rainbow diamond made of clear acrylic rods and lit with LED color lights that go through the colors of the rainbow.
The Star of The North artwork is inspired by the Minnesota state motto, “L'Etoile du Nord" (Star of the North) is based on the Minnesota State Motto that was first adopted in 1861 and is on our state seal. L'Etoile du Nord is
6 feet tall, made of aluminum and covered with holographic rainbow vinyl. Inside the star is a crystal prism that is lit so tiny light
rainbows show on the ground below the star.
L'Etoile du Nord uses rainbows to both be visually beautiful, but also to impart
the meaning that anybody of any race, creed, nationality or sexual orientation are welcome in Minnesota.
